How to Program a Toyota Key Fob

Replacing your Toyota key fob? If you drive a Toyota model with power locks and doors, any replacement keys will require reprogramming in order to work with your vehicle. Purchasing a remote directly from Toyota will save you the time of reprogramming the remote yourself, but going the DIY route will save you money if you learn how to program a Toyota key fob yourself. Fortunately, the process is fairly quick and easy. Don’t get stranded in Evergreen Park without a working key!

How to Program Your Toyota Vehicle Remote

Get in your car, make sure all doors are closed, and have your ignition key ready. Then, follow these steps for how to how to program your Toyota key fob:

  1. Turn your key in the ignition from “off” to “on,”  and repeat within five seconds. Remove your key from the ignition.
  2. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver door twice, and then insert and remove the key from the ignition one more time.
  3. Again, be sure to perform steps one and two within 40 seconds. You’ve now entered remote programming mode.

The door locks should cycle within three seconds to indicate the vehicle has entered remote programming mode. If this doesn’t happen, repeat steps one through three, or schedule service to get in-person help. Your remote should now be programmed to recognize your vehicle! Test it by locking and unlocking the power door locks. To exit remote-programming mode, open the driver door.


How to Change the Battery in a Toyota Key Fob

If your power locks aren’t responding like they used to, your key fob battery may need to be replaced. This is something you can do yourself in a few simple steps. Here’s how to open a Toyota key fob and change the battery:

Key Fob Battery Change Supplies

  • Mini screwdriver or coin
  • CR 2032 3V battery

Steps to change your Toyota key fob’s battery:

  1. Press the button on the side of the fob. This will eject the metal ignition key from inside the fob.
  2. Set the key aside. With the key ejected, you’ll now see a notch on the bottom of the fob.
  3. Insert a mini flathead screwdriver or a coin into the notch and gently pry apart the two halves of the key fob.
  4. On one of the halves, you’ll see a green circuit board. Gently remove the circuit board to access the battery, which is housed on the back.
  5. Carefully pry out the battery, taking care not to scratch the circuit board.
  6. Replace with a new CR 2032 3V battery, negative side down.
  7. Replace the circuit board, reassemble key fob halves, and reinsert the ignition key.
