What is the Difference Between Used & Certified Pre-Owned?

Used cars on a car lot

Comparing Toyota CPO vs. used cars? You’re not alone. More and more drivers are realizing that certified pre-owned vehicles offer benefits that are difficult to pass up. However, since CPO vehicles also cost more than standard used vehicles, Evergreen Park-drivers are right to want a closer look at their options before moving forward. So, what is the difference between used and certified pre-owned cars? Our introductory guide covers everything you need to know to start shopping.

Used vs. CPO: The Basics

All used cars, including CPO vehicles, have been driven by at least one previous owner. Beyond this point, it’s easy to see where used and CPO vehicles differ:

  • Oak Lawn Toyota inspects all used vehicles before we put them up for sale, but CPO vehicles are required to undergo a more extensive manufacturer-designed inspection. Any problems encountered during the inspection are fixed before the CPO vehicle heads to the lot.
  • A used car with high mileage isn’t necessarily a bad investment, but many Orland Park and Countryside drivers want a vehicle that they can own for years to come. If that sounds like you, you’re better off with a low-mileage CPO vehicle. (Models with high mileage cannot be certified.)
  • CPO vehicles are protected by warranty coverage, generally for at least a year after the date of purchase. A dealership may choose to offer a warranty with other kinds of used vehicles, but only new and CPO models are backed by the manufacturer.

Used vs. CPO: How is a Toyota Model Certified?

What’s the difference between used and certified pre-owned where Toyota is concerned? It all starts with the certification process. A used Toyota vehicle must meet all of the following qualifications if it’s going to be sold as a CPO model:

  • Less than 6 years old
  • Fewer than 85,000 miles on the odometer
  • Must pass 160-point manufacturer-designed inspection
  • Must include CARFAX® vehicle history report

Used vs. CPO: Benefits of the Toyota CPO Program

Low mileage and a quality guarantee are both enticing benefits on their own, but we’ve barely scratched the surface of why discerning drivers love CPO vehicles. That’s because Toyota CPO vehicles also include:

  • Up to seven years or 100,000 miles of 24/7 Roadside Assistance, starting from the vehicle’s original in-service date
  • Up to 12 months or 12,000 miles of limited comprehensive warranty coverage, starting from the date of your purchase
  • Up to seven years or 100,000 miles of limited powertrain warranty coverage, starting from the vehicle’s original in-service date
